WATER FLOW OVER A MOUNTAIN - THE BERNOULLI CHANNEL

DEMONSTRATE BERNOULLI EFFECT, LEE WAVES, SHOCK-JUMP (BORE) FORMATION.

This demonstration uses a recirculating water flow channel in which water is driven over a smooth obstacle.  The variables are flow rate (controlled by constricting the output tube on the pump), and flow level H, controlled by adjusting the outflow gate.

Connect as shown.  The collection bucket usually sits on a chair under the outflow port.  The pump sits on the floor below the bucket..  The tank is set on a table.  For a large class image the obstacle regionn using the video camera.  For best effect Kalliroscopic platelets may have to be added to the blue-dye water solution (or at least stir up the solution well before filling the bucket).

Parts in reality.

  1. Fill the buck half full.  Locate it under the exit spillway preferably on a chair so that the bucket rim is just below the outlet. Put the pump on the floor next to the bucket's chair.
  2. Place the pump inlet tube (coming out the center of the pump face) into the bucket and clamp it.
  3. Suck on the pump outlet until fluid enters the pump.
  4. Jam the pump outlet into the feeder end (left in the above picture).
  5. Turn on the pump and adjust the flow rate.  Use the exit gate to obtain different states.

Warning:  Do not close the exit gate down too much and leave unattended.  The tank will probably overflow.
